Inside Story – South African challenges – 06 Aug 09

Posted on April 8th, 2010 by admin

More trouble brewing on the horizon for South African President Jacob Zuma. Workers at South Africa’s biggest electricity firm – Eskom – threatened to go on strike next week after rejecting a wage offer. They have been offered an 8 percent increase in wages, which is above the current annual inflation rate of 6.9 percent…. However, well below their demand of 14 percent.
Eskom generates 95 percent of South Africa’s electricity and 45 percent of Africa’s. A strike could result in huge disruption to power supplies.

South Africa has recently been hit by several strikes with workers demanding and often receiving huge pay rises. Last week, about 150 thousand municipal workers ended a week-long strike after being offered a pay rise slightly less than their initial demand… but nearly double the annual inflation rate. Only days before, the government was spared a potentially crippling strike in the mining industry, when they managed to agree on a wage deal.

So, will Zuma pass his first test as president? Or will the mood of anger go much further?

Inside Story, with presenter Lauren Taylor, discusses

South African police fight obesity

Posted on April 2nd, 2010 by admin

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates and is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

In an initiative to boost its security force, South African police have been ordered to shape up or ship out in a newly launched “get fit” programme.

The fitness initiative comes after a recent study found that more than half of police officers in the port city of Elizabeth are “clinically obese”.

Al Jazeera’s Tania Page reports.

How to grow an african violet from a leaf cutting?

Posted on March 29th, 2010 by admin

I went to an african violet show bought some plants and a leaf cutting. I need to know how to grow it in soil, with no root growing hormone, and then to transplant it.

Rooting hormone isn’t necessary, but it does make things easier. First, trim the stem down to about an inch or so on an angle. Fill up a small pot with light soil (don’t tamp it down) and just stick the leaf in on an angle. You don’t want the leaf to touch the soil at all. Water well. Don’t water again until the soil is dry and don’t fertilize until you see plantlets. Keep out of direct sunlight; if you have fluorescent grow lights, use them! A lot of people like to put the pot in a sealed plastic bag to promote humidity – this works well if you can make sure that no condensation gets on the leaves or they will rot. I’ve had lots of luck propagating without the plastic bag.

Anyway, the leaves need to set down roots (about a month) before you’ll see any new plants coming up. The plants themselves won’t come up for 3-4 months and sometimes even longer. When your plantlet leaves are about the size of your thumbnail, gently separate and re-pot each plant into smallest pots you can find.
