You hardly see any connection with African Americans and Africans with music etc….yet you see a connection with Caribbean blacks and Africans, how come? Why are African American culture so different?

Caribbean and african blacks have a stronger connection and knowledge of the ancestral roots
than american blacks
because of slavery and repressed education
remember it was once illegal for black american slaves to read
gaining equal human rights took priority over passing down history
black americans were disconnected from their african roots many generations ago
so they created their own separate identity

I am not saying all African Americans do because I have met some that don’t and I don’t I am half African American but I have always noticed that. No to offend anyone but some of there names sound like it could be another language of its own, or taken from two words and made up into one. I am just curious? I am curious to wonder what their parents were thinking? Or what were they drinking? I see it usually is a trend with the younger generation.

Key word: "African" those names derived from slaves that came to america from africa and have been passed on through generations until this day, like you said not all african americans have unfamiliar names it is purely their choice.

I have a cultural fair in school where my orchestra plays Kum Ba Yah and La Bamba, and I have some extra work to do, so how does African music influence Hispanic music?
Thanks for the answers

There is a strong connection; African slaves were brought into areas like South America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the African music was preserved by the victims of slavery, and came to be mixed with the local European art music. This happened in the New Orleans area, and blues (and jazz) was born, which is a solely American art form.

I feel a great deal of compassion, regret and admiration for these black people; so many died under the horrific conditions, but those who survived remembered and preserved their musical culture.

If someone has one parent from Africa they are treated as they are some type of immigrants, and treated as if they arent American. Other people will tell them go back to Africa, and make fun of you for having one African parent. But when someone has a European parent most people don’t even know that, and those people can easily assimilate in the white community. I have an African parents and every one even my teachers always ask me about Africa, as if I ve been there. A lot of people even think I was born there.

i’m a child of african immigrants but i’m from the uk.. so technically I am an immigrant to america now. but many children of african immigrants tend to see themselves differently from other black americans and americans in general, because of the african culture present at home

I recently heard that there is a huge difference between black people and african americans. Supposedly its the african americans who are behaving in all the stereotypical manners, such as the crime, gangs, violence, poor public behavior, poor language, making fatherless kids, blaming racism for everything, etc. Is this true? How do black people feel about african americans tainting their image? And how do you tell the difference between the two kinds of people?

THE TRUTH: not all black people are african americans. just like people assume people with chinese eyes are all chinese but some are asian, east asian, cambonian, chinese, veitnamese. the same goes with "black people" there are black latinas, jamiacans, carribean, dominican and so on

As far as I understand attitudes in African and the African diaspora are very disapproving towards homosexuality and lgbt sexuality. I am familiar with the recently proposed law in Uganda mandating the death penalty for homosexuality, disapproving attitudes in Jamaica and disapproval among some in the African-American community. Has this been passed down from traditional cultures or does it come from Christianity and/or the legacy of colonialism? Are there or was there transgender roles in African societies?

Yes, as an african american i feel like i’m constantly struggling against my own people. This is exactly why i don’t want to attend a black college. I would be pretty surrounded by people who disapprove of me. Not saying that all black people do because i know a lot don’t but still odds are. I have found that white people are usually more approving. But as i live in the south, that really doesn’t help my cause, with racist white people and homophobic black people.

How was the African slave trade transformed by the rise of the Atlantic world? Why did the use of African slaves emerge in some parts of the Americas but not in others?

Slavery was wide spread..
The black slave trade mostly followed the need for products..
Rum..and tropical rain forest products..
Even the building of the Panama Canal carried some torment of slavery..
A transformation..of black slavery..??
I would say–that Africa was useing slaves in a very different way–
The white man appeared and that was the transformation you might be looking at..
The black slave was beginning to encounter–the psycological nature of living on a plantation..
Where as purely African slaves..they may have never moved one single moment in their minds..the white man..used and caused psycology to develop in the blackman’s mind..
Eventually–the owner’s of a black slave–may have sought out–expert opinion.
