Me and my wife want to visit South Africa what is the safest city for white people I’m American and my wife is a Kiwi (New Zealand) we currently live in Christchurch, New Zealand and want to see South Africa someone told us Capetown is the safest what do you think?

Cape Town is great and very popular with both locals and tourists, but like the rest of the world there are also no go areas, why limit yourself to only one city when SA offers so much more?

None of them are safe!!!If you choose then Durban,the other two,you have too be-wary,likewise in Durban,it all depends on the area you visit but don’t be fooled by the locals.

Cape Town would be my choice. It has the most to do and is geared towards tourism. There is also variety and lots of natural beauty. I would guess it is the safest city to visit but have no statistics to prove it.

All of them are safe, but Cape Town has always been very relaxed and cosmopolitan. Crime is also relatively low.

The crime in South Africa is no different to the crime that you will find in other parts of the world.
If you are going to visit South Africa, try to see as much as possible….it is absolutely beautiful. I would say that if you are planning quite a long trip, then make sure you finish off in Cape Town…loads on offer to see and do.

Lol, I don’t think it makes a difference on what colour your skin is. It’s a bigger deal in the USA than it is in SA. If you research the areas and stay in the safer parts of that area along with remaining conscientious the entire time, you should enjoy where you travel. I’ve never been to South Africa, but I have travelled a lot and a friend of mine from SA has travelled here and said that travelling through places here is a LOT like there (minus the fact that we get there on the right side of the road as opposed to the left, lol). I’ve been robbed in a "safe city" and had a blast in a "bad" city. It’s all individual. Wear a bag around your waist that goes UNDER your clothes for your money, this will prevent pickpockets. I do this when NOT travelling (pickpockets are a prob in Phoenix, Az). Walk with your head up, if you walk with your head down you look less confident. Keep looking around and taking note of your surrounding. Wear comfortable shoes you can run in (not that you’ll need to run, but wearing things you can’t run in generally end up being painful after a day of walking around seeing the sights). Stay in heavily trafficked areas. When passing buildings, stay as close to the road as you can, if someone’s between the buildings, they’re going to try and grab the person hugging the wall, not the street. If your wife has long hair, DO NOT WEAR A PONYTAIL!!! This is common self defence practice. If she must wear it up, put it into a French Twist or bun, ponytails are like handlebars to people in an attack. There is actually a statistic showing women with a ponytail are more than twice as likely to be attacked. Learn a few local words and join an online chat board and get to know someone from there that you feel comfortable talking to and get more information from them.
You follow basic personal safety measures and you can travel most places so long as you follow all the right guidelines for the area. My grandparents had a great time down there. South Africans on the whole are very kind people.

I have travelled enough to know that there are basics to travelling anywhere, be it another city or another continent. Also- I was a self-defence instructor and my mother worked in a victim’s advocacy network that dealt with educating people on how to NOT be a victim.
Stellenbosch, near Cape Town. Its really a safe town (I mean it, it really is like in a bubble) and as a bonus it has tons of offerings to tourists: wine, wildlife, great dining, beautiful views.

Mike, with all the latest incidents in Christchurch, I’m sure that you and your wife have become more wary as far as safety goes. However, New Zealand is otherwise known as ‘sleepy hollow’ when it comes to being streetwise/street safe. South Africa is a country worth seeing, just take everyone’s advice above, and enjoy your visit.

There isn’t a safe city in SA. Every city has its good and bad areas and even in the good areas you have to be always on the look-out. Even in the towns. No matter where you go in SA – be careful.

Capetown for sure. But it is NOT safe. No place in South Africa is. I lived there for 5 years and a large amount things happend to us and people we know. The worst being my Grandad being fatally shot in a car jacking when I was a little girl and my Grandma who also was in the car at the time was shot in the shoulder while escaping out the door. I don’t remember my Grandad but it’s sad to see my Nans eyes whenever I mention him. Within a 2 weeks within arriving in Jo-burg my Dad was robbed at gunpoint by a begger while going to grab a newspaper at the local shop. My Mum while out at dinner one night with women from work got caught in the middle of an armed robbery and witnessed the women behind the counter get shot twice in the head. She still shudders at the thought. My Father had been out drinking one night when he foolishly got behind the wheel of the car. He arrived home but because of his state he forgot to shut the security gate and 3 armed men ran in and held him at gunpoint in the car in the garage and asked if there was anyone inside the house. Luckily he said no (I was sleeping at the time). My scairest experiance was just before we left South Africa. We were at a set of robots (traffic lights) and a man came charging at us with a pistol and attempted to smash the window. We drove off and thank god he didn’t shoot at us. A young student teacher at my old school was stabbed in the eye with a pencil sharpener and at my cousin’s school two boys got into a fight and as a result one was fatally stabbed. My best friend’s older sister (who I never met) had a slumber party with all her girlfriends. The jelous x boyfriend of one of the girls charged in and shot her sister and three friends dead. My friend is still traumatised by witnessing it and luckily have since moved to Ireland. Don’t get me wrong, South Africa is a beautiful country but please do be careful. What you’re use to in Christchurch would be the occasional stabbing or murder but in a city like Capetown (one of the safest in SA) there are at least 12 murders a day and countless shootings, car jackings, stabbings, etc. Most SAFFAS say there are 54 murders a day on av. I was reading the other day that it is now at 89 a day. A grim statistic the people of SA are facing. Not everyone from SA would have experianced what I have, but it just goes to show you some of the stuff that can happen there. I’m glad to be out of SA. God bless Auckland, God defend New Zealand and have a safe trip and a safe journey home =)
Safety tips: do NOT go out at night full stop. If you’re driving at night do NOT stop at robots but slow down to look for traffic and drive. Your wife shouldn’t carry around her handbag or it WILL be snatched. Don’t wear jellewry around the streets. Don’t carry around too much money. If there is a empty place like a park or beach do not go into it.

Cape Town, but you must be careful and ask a local tourist office where to go. You will have a good time down there.
Here are some tips:
If driving make sure your handbag is no visible ( in case some one smashes your window at a stop street or traffic light)
When on the beach always make sure one of you looks after the stuff while the other goes swimming and do not loiter around isolated places especially after dark.
Always make sure nothing is visible when locking up the car.
Keep cameras etc in a small backpack instead of hanging around your neck and always be aware of who is around you if speaking on mobile phone.
Just be aware of your surroundings and never look lost! Always know where you’re going!
