Iron Maiden – To Tame a Land

Iron Maiden – To Tame a Land

To Tame a Land is the closing track on Iron Maiden’s fourth studio album, Piece of Mind.

It was inspired by the classic science fiction novel Dune by Frank Herbert. However, when Steve Harris requested permission from the author to name the song “Dune” and to use a spoken quotation as the track’s intro, his request was met with a stern reply from Frank Herbert’s agent: “No. Because Frank Herbert doesn’t like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden”. This statement was backed up with a legal threat, and eventually the song was renamed “To Tame a Land” and released in 1983.

Off Piece of Mind album, Iron Maiden’s 4th album.

    Well, I hate to …
Well, I hate to make a sports analogy, but if a player gets severely injured, he’s never the same once he returns. Same thing with Labrie, can’t remember what he had, but it was severe enough that he’d never fully recover. Agreed that his voice is indeed aging, but that illness certainly did not help in that regard.

    Apparently, Bruce …
Apparently, Bruce Dickinson studied history at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London UK, and was active in student politics… So when he joined the band, the long tour bus journeys were properly filled with rambling about all the classic historical periods e.t.c. I guess Steve Harris must of had to sit next him most of the 1980′s …

Ok now I see what you mean and I do agree. I just wondered whether you meant the album as a whole or the Title Track.
Man you just gotta love Maiden’s song topics- Dune, The Book Of Revelations, The Charge of The Light Brigade, WW2 and The Myth of Icarus- all in POM. Legendary album along with Powerslave.

The prelude to the Album Powerslave… of which the track ‘powerslave’ is an integral part as well… I think steve and the band turned the page on his pocket music theory book and saw the Phrygian mode.
