    Yes, we do.
    Haha.
    No, I believe the tales stemmed off of the sexist thoughts of the olden time period;damsels in distress, blahblahblah, you know the deal.
    Guys didnt feel needed enough so in ficitional stories women were always idiotic and helpless so their man could save them, making many stereotypes of how a woman or man should and shouldn’t act.
    I may sound synical,
    but hey, i do make a good point ;]

    Medieval mythology:
    Dragon == sin, old ways, etc.
    Maiden == innocent unblemished heart/mind.

    The Dragon consumes the Maiden. Symbolism complete.

    It was the two dynamic ends of the good and bad ruler. Dragon representing the beast or devil~~~~~~~~~The maiden fair and pure all that is good.
    Then you have the dragon, who makes war on all that is good, so now we all gather up our torches and pitch forks ,lets go out there and kick some dragon butt.

    Oh, sorry in answer to your question, the dragon never wanted the old used up wench…. not as tasty. meow.

    Nah, that was just the old form of matchmaking.

    Basically the dragon made a deal with the dad to keep the maiden until a deserving suitor showed up. (Dad pays dragon in gold, art, books, etc…) And the local villages start the rumor that the dragon will eat said maiden, to attract the "heroes". Dragon watches the various "knights in shining armor", killing the unsuitable ones. When one that meets the requirements shows up, the dragon stops the knight releases the maiden, fakes death, and moves to new area (along with their horde) to start the next match-making process. Leaving the happy couple to live out their life as the knight being a local hero.

    Face it given the size of a dragon and the thickness of the scales, a knight using a lance on foot against a dragon is basically a toothpick wielded by a squirrel to a human… not bloody likely going to hurt it. (and the classic tale is the knight faces the dragon in its lair…) And the swords… come on, even one of the dragons claws is more dangerous that the swords wielded by knights.

    Honestly humans are not even very tasty, too many bones and not enough meat. You are better off with a deer or cow.
